Workers are living and working longer, with five generations now working side by side. Research shows that multigenerational teams increase productivity and worker engagement while lowering absenteeism. Yet, in a recent AARP survey 78 percent of workers age 45+ said they have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace. A 2015 Annual Global CEO study found that 64% of firms had diversity and inclusion strategies, but only 8% of those included age.
Gerontologist Dr. Erdman Palmore aptly stated back in 2001 - Ageism is “the third great ‘ism’ in our society, after racism and sexism.”
2022 is almost upon us. The time is now to dismantle this -ism as well.
DEIB efforts aim to create equal opportunity for everyone to succeed. As communities and workplaces continue to become more multi-cultural and multi-generational, let’s examine the essential need to include age in DEIB frameworks.
