Public Private Strategies Statement on SCOTUS Rejection of Independent State Legislature Theory
WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in Moore v. Harper to reject the Independent State Legislature Theory (ISLT), a legal theory that would have radically reshaped how federal elections are conducted in the United States.
In response to today’s decision, Rhett Buttle, Founder of Public Private Strategies and Co-Founding Partner of the Business & Democracy Initiative , released the following statement:
“Today’s decision in Moore v. Harper is a victory for democracy and everything that our democracy supports, including a thriving economy. By affirming that politicians cannot dictate the rules of federal elections with no checks and balances, today’s ruling ensures that elected officials will remain accountable to the people and communities they represent.
“The American business community has played a critical role in protecting our democracy and calling out the danger of Independent State Legislature Theory (ISLT). Powerful research from the Business & Democracy Initiative and conducted by Morning Consult shows that business leaders overwhelmingly agree that a ‘well-functioning democracy is important to a strong economy,' while 81 percent of business leaders think that 'businesses should act to ensure safe and fair elections.’ And business leaders have shown up to push back against the ISLT and the risk it poses to our democracy. Over the course of the past year, the Business & Democracy Initiative has hosted briefings with business leaders in North Carolina and across the country to discuss the ISLT, and get business owners activated in calling out the danger of the ISLT.”
